Open Burning & Burn Permit Information


All inquiries regarding burn permits, setbacks and requirements for burning, both city and county should be directed to the Florida Forest Service. They may be contacted at 850-681-5951 or 850-681-5950.

Open Burning:

  • Check with your local Florida Forest Service office to make sure it is legal to burn in your area:
      • Make sure you meet the required setbacks.
      • 25 feet from any wildlands, brush or combustible structure.
      • 25 feet from your house.
      • 150 feet from other occupied buildings.
      • 50 feet from paved public roads.
      • Only an 8 feet diameter burn pile OR Non-Combustible Container.
  • Burn only yard waste, no household garbage (includes paper products and newspapers).
  • Burning is Not permitted on rainy, foggy, or windy days.
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Keep a water hose or shovel handy in case your fire escapes.
  • Make sure smoke does not obstruct visibility on nearby roads.
  • Be sure fire is completely out before you leave.
